Parents' Fear about the use of internet in classes

"Nancy Willard, director of the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use, says that Internet safety and security efforts shouldn’t overhype or exaggerate problems like child predation, as most young people are making good choices online. “We have to make sure that the information we are providing youth is accurate,” she says.

Michael Kaiser, the National Cyber Security Alliance executive director, agrees that fear-based approaches aren’t the best way. “People need to understand the risks to make informed decisions,” he says. “But we don’t think people should be beat over the head that this is so scary that it shouldn’t be done.”

Nor should the risks deter districts from incorporating promising online educational tools into the classroom like social networking, he adds.

Author and educator Will Richardson says he doesn’t see a “groundswell of support” for social learning and networking tools in class that connect students to people or resources outside of the classroom. And many districts are still wary."

I am sure this fear is worldwide. We as teachers need to be careful when planning and implementing certain webs or access to internet in our students.

  1. Hello Yariela,

    Thank you for your reply.
I absolutely agree with you about the parent element, of course not all of them will be convinced that this new way of learning is quite useful for their children. I still don't have that long experience in teaching as you have, but believe me that also here in Kosova we teachers face the same problem about using technology in classes, because usually parents think that in a class with computers their children with neglect their studies and with use the common websites that these days they use. Our duty as teachers is to prove them that this can be changed. This is the 21st century, the world is being digitized.
Regarding the books, yes, they will be in our classrooms and we always should use them, but I still think that if we sometimes mix the ways of learning and teaching it would be very refreshing and motivating not only for students, but also for teachers.

Thank you again for replying to my feedback.

    Best,
    Blerta
